Descent of Naerys
Arconeum is a white ore that has a faint white glow. Used for its combustible properties, it has been a central part of the conflict that has plagued Naerys for some time.
History and Origin
Discovered in 1543 DR by the human academician Paladius Denitus at The Academy, Arconeum was seen as a substitute for coal or wood. Within a decade it had become ubiquitous, and was used in everything from heating to cooking to illumination. Due to the large number of Arconeum lanterns Cirraine was once known as the ‘City of Lights’.
Arconeum’s origins are believed to be the mineralization of spent arcane energy. Denitus believed that as spellcasters used magic the residual arcane energy that was unspent in the spell was absorbed by the earth, and crystallized below the surface. Exploratory mines opened up all over the continent, with the most prolific mining activity happening at New Nashkel.
Within 120 years, numerous mines including the New Nashkel mines were exhausted. The extent of the resource crisis is evidenced by the collapse of the New Nashkel Mines in 1660 DR. The resource crisis also was credited as a major contributor to the Orcish invasion of the Elvish Cape in 1661 DR.
